Beautiful ThingBeautiful Thing

Jonathan Harvey the author of Beautiful Thing is still amazed at people's reactions to the Film, so many years after it first came out. Although I highly recommend everyone who is gay, straight, BI or alive watch this endearing tale of two boys love.

Ste and Jamie are two teenagers growing up side by side in London on one of the roughest housing estates in the area. Ste with his abusive father and Jamie with his loud mother, Sandra who steals the show at many points struggle to accept their new found attraction to each other during a memorable summer .

Jamie and SteJamie's best friend, Leah who lives next believes that she is the reincarnation of Mamma Cass and the wonderful upbeat lyrics and tunes of the Mammas and the Pappas set the story perfectly.

The story is gentle yet poignant at the same time, dealing with some of the issues of self acceptance, but shying away from the issues of homophobia and fear surrounding queer people.

The film is a truly lovely and gentle love story although it has its fair share of reality with abuse and other serious and real issues dealt with. It's one of those films that I believe should be mandatory for all school to play to teenagers to dispel many of the myths about being gay and coming out.
