Response to Marc and Anonymous

I feel that I really should respond to both Marc and Anonymous (get some guts anonymous and use your email address or blog address) on their comments to my post on David from Big Broether wanting to become a National Party Politician.

First off I stand by what I said especially about gay people who support right wing politics, I have a huge problem with them.

Let's face it, the poilitical party to which David is aligning himself with, actively displays hatred, intolerance and by default supports violence against gays and lesbians.

Yes he is as entitled to his opinions as I am. But when that opinion affects people's lives negatively I will attack.

Marc you say that these things are not important. I am sorry to hear that you don't believe that equality is not important, and people such as Harvey Milk and others gave their lives for their beliefs is not important.

The struggle for equality is of vital importance.

Finally let me say this to you Marc, don't you dare tell me to "less time looking at your own tummy flab in the mirror and listen to other points of view" you have no idea what or who I am apart from this very one dimensional look at me though my blog. This blog does not define my values and beliefs.

Yes I must help change things as they are not good in our society and while we have bigoted politicians in power they will never get any better.

To anonymous, use your name and email address if you wish to attack that's only fair.

I don't live in Newtown and I don't wear pink coloured glasses, my friends are not all gay nor do they all live in gay ghettos.

I used "Fat suburban queen" as a term not a description of where they live or even whether they are fat (as they do not live in the suburbs and they are not fat either.

There enough said.

The Victorian state Liberal leader Ted Baillieu has expressed more small 'l' liberal views on civil unions that Labour's Steve Bracks, so the theory that it is not possible to be conservative and gay does not stack up.

If change is to come about, it will occur due a shift on the right side of politics. The left rarely controls both houses of parliament, so support from the right is required and this will not happen by taking a hostile approach.

Good on David for joining the National party. The reason that National party members may be 'homophobic' is because they do not know any gay people personally and their views are created from incorrect negative stereotypes.

If you want to change the world, why don't you take a trip into the rural heartland and introduce yourself to a few farmers and show them that gay people are not just one dimensional - and you may even learn something too!

In my experience it is a small small small small group in the right wing of politics who are either supportive or progressive towards social politics and in particular equality for gay rights.

Yes I agree the best way to affect chnage is to work from within, this is true in many ways and in previous lives (read my career) I have worked within to affect change.

Change also happens when people unite together at a grass roots level to force change to happen.

However in this case the majority of the National's core values and beliefs are diametrically opposite those of gay equality.

There is a huge amount of power by a minority of right right wing groups across the Australian Political landscape.

You tell me to go and chat to a few farmers? I farmers, and have chatted and met with many people who live and work in rural and remote settings all across this country.

Yes a great deal of homophobia is caused from no experience with people who are not straight, and yes when people get to know the diverse nature of others their core beliefs are challenged and then changed.

I am sorry though, I cannnot and will not support even to potentially affect change a political party which has proven itself time and time and time again to be discriminatory against minorities and gays and lesbians.

David is not the kind of role-model I would like to have had growing up.

Marc said:He conducted himself well at all time, emotions included.

We must have watched different shows because all I ever saw was arrogance and hypocrisy. He was too busy crying 'poor me I'm gay and I live my life suffering discrimination from everyone all the time because of it! No-one has had it as hard as me!'

He never listened to anyone's opinion with the open mind he was asking for and he proceeded to sprout inaccurate 'facts' about teen suicide across national television to justify his own agenda.

The 'rural heartland' is not what we need to worry about. We need to be far more concerned with peoples fleeting attention spans.

Yes, there are people of extreme right-wing views in positons of power, but for every Heffernan there is a Georgio to balance it out.

Grass roots action is an effective way of making an impact, but I am concerned that labelling all people who hold a conservative point of view as being homophobic makes it very easy for those you are trying to influence to dismiss your points of argument.

On the bright side, the Nationals are in decline, and equality in law is not a matter of 'if' but 'when'.

Perhaps I am being overly optimistic, anyway I hope to find a bit of time soon to check out your site.

I don't label all people who have conservative views homophobic, often they heterosexist, which is different.

yes the nationals are in decline but the right wing rleigous nutcases are on the increase.

My concern always has been with the adding of new discriminitory laws we are going backwards not forward, and by supporting an organisaton that in any way shape or form promotes discrimination and bigotry IE the national party we are pushing rigths back even further.
