Churches should lose their Tax Free Status

The hundreds of millions of dollars poured into the Anti-Gay Proposition 8 by the Catholic and Mormon Churches highlights the need for a change in policy.

Not just in the USA but throughout the world.

I am totally against Churches having tax free status to begin with, but when they use this money for political purposes this is the last straw.

Apparently it was the Mormon Churches extra millions of dollars that tipped the vote in favour of Proposition 8.

It's high time the Churches were taxed and viewed upon as the business they are.

apparently Focus on the Family is going broke because they blew so much cash on Prop 8. clearly tax laws need to be revised when groups use their tax savings to segregate society.

I agree. If a Church isn't going to maintain the separation of religion and state, they have no right to be exempt from tax. However, there are degrees of this... taking a view that is contrary to some of the population isn't quite the same as actively telling people to vote a certain way.

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints actively disobeyed the rules under which they operate by donating. The Churches which gave sermons telling people to vote yes on 8 actively disobeyed the rules. However, as two of the largest Churches in the US were part of this, I don't see the powers that be changing anything, because it's something that will effect the majority of the population.
